Neil’s Birthday Trip Begins

After a fairly torturous flight from Perth in the middle of the night to Singapore and then Bangkok, we arrived fairly tired and stiff, but we were picked up by Tom’s Taxis and taken to our very nice hotel. The room had a separate bedroom, kitchen and living area which is way above our usual standard. A swim in the pool followed by a couple of hours of sleep and we were ready to meet the rest of the group.

It was great to catch up with Debbie and Neil again (Click on image above to see all photos in the gallery) and after a few minutes of meeting Julie and Graham, from England, we knew that we were in for a great trip. The first night we went out for dinner at a nice restaurant to get to know each other and it all went very well. The meal cost around 1800 baht each, that is about $90 a couple.

The next morning we were picked up by Mr Palm in the party bus and off we went to Kanchanaburi (River Kwai) for the first part of our trip. The taxi was very comfortable and had an interesting LED display on the roof which we could all laugh at. Once we got to kanchanaburi, we were a bit early, so went off to the nearest bar to drink and wait for our rooms. Several beers later, we stayed for lunch which was excellent and then returned to the hotel to find our rooms were very pleasant, we could just walk out our door into the pool, very decadent.

In the evening, we walked up the road until we found a restaurant that looked popular and went in. We ordered lots of beer and several excellent dishes of chicken and prawns. The fried rice was fantastic with prawns and squid through it. The cost came out to be 600 baht, about $30 a couple. The food was easily as good as the good restaurant in Bangkok. Everyone was happy to say that this style of eating is much better.

Breakfast the next morning was really good, but the highlight was the coffees, each one had a different decoration on top, the best ones were the railway tracks, representing the bridge and the other really good one was the picture of Neil on top on his coffee. The next morning, there was a large cycling group in for breakfast so the coffees were very plain, we were just lucky the previous morning.

After breakfast off we went to our first golf game at the Grand Prix Golf club.
