Phimai Historical Park – near Korat

We left Khon Kaen and were driven to Korat, via another Khmer ruin. This site contains the Prasat Hin Phimai (tower or temple), one of the most important Mahayana Buddhist temples in Thailand, dating back about 1000 years.

On the drive we stopped at a service station for a stretch and bathroom break. We were pleased that we were being watched over, though his facial expression seemed a bit grumpy.

Each time we arrive at one of Bruce’s choices, we seem to have to circumnavigate it until we can finally find an entrance. It is never an encouraging feeling and tends to lower our expectations of what we might be about to see.

This site was clearly more impressive than the small site we saw in Khon Kaen. It consisted of several buildings, with a wall going around the outside of the main temple area. Rosie is standing out the front of the Phlab Phla, which was a rectangular building with many rooms in it, thought to be a changing area for nobles and dignitaries before they entered the temple.

The carvings on the walls of the temple were much more intricate than the previous ruin and there was a lot of restoration work taking place so that you could see what the original buildings looked like.

In a couple of the buildings there were statues set up of the kings of this period.

As we left the temple, we couldn’t help but laugh at the Kardashian bums on the back of the lions. They even needed to put up small signs telling people not to sit on the bums.

After our visit we continued on to Korat and our next hotel. We are staying in the Centre Point Terminal 21 Hotel. The hotel is very modern and we were met by a doorman who opened the doors for us. Terminal 21 is a large shopping mall attached to the hotel so the girls are in heaven.

Rosie and Bruce went down to the 6th floor to have a swim, it was very pleasant and refreshing after a hard days ruining.
