Piraeus Port of Athens

Today Bruce was looking for something different to do, rather than another ancient ruin. He decided to visit Piraeus, which is the port where all the cruise ships and island cruise ships start out. We took the train to the port, which cost $1.80 each for a 90 minute ticket. The train was easy to catch and only required one transfer. Interesting how much graffiti there was on and in the train, it only highlights that although the fare was cheap, they weren’t making enough money to properly look after the system.

Once we arrived at the cruise port we took a pleasant walk though a windy but cool port city which in itself was different, we hadn’t had any wind in Greece for the two weeks we have been here. We walked over to another part of the port where all the luxury yachts were moored. This area had a lot of shop stalls along the marina so we walked until we found a nice restaurant overlooking the bay.

The meal was excellent and the views were very pleasant. We enjoyed deciding which boat was the one we were going to cruise the Mediterranean in.

We noticed that even boats have a hierarchy of position. If you look closely, the boats near the end of the jetties were the smallest and then they got progressively larger from right to left.

After the meal, we caught a bus back from the restaurant all the way to our hotel without any transfers. Perfect day trip.
