Kalamata Days

We loved being up in the mountains but Rosie didn’t cope very well with the drive down to Kalamata. Bruce has never spent so much time looking out of the driver’s side window or the passenger’s windows to see where the road went. Most of the trips we have driven in the last two days have been on very narrow winding roads with single lane bridges and multiple hairpin turns. Looking into mirrors on the corners to see if anything was coming the other way was also a new experience.

Once in Kalamata, the temperature was suddenly over 30°C and even though we were very close to the water and up in the air, the temperature didn’t drop until the early hours of the morning. The next day we had the choice between driving to Sparta or going swimming. Another day of winding roads or swim???

We had been swimming in Italy a few years ago, but this was a much better experience. There were plenty of umbrellas and beach lounges to use, all you were expected to do was buy something. After our first swim, we had a coffee and milkshake and the prices were the same as everywhere else so realistically the chairs were free. After the second swim Bruce had a beer.

The water was warm and crystal clear, didn’t matter how far out in the water you went. The salt content wasn’t very high, just like a salt water swimming pool. We will be going back again tomorrow.
